Avoiding scams/fraud and some personal safety tips
You can avoid most potential scammers and fraudsters by following some simple rules:
- When buying or selling, always deal locally with people you can meet in person. For personal safety, ensure that you bring someone with you for the meeting.
- Never wire funds by Western Union, Moneygram, or any other wire services. The person asking for this transfer is most likely a scammer.
- Fake cashier's cheques, money orders are quite common. Banks will cash them and make you responsible when they find out that it is fake, sometimes weeks later.
- Epostasia is not involved in any type of transaction. We do not handle payments nor guarantee any transactions, provide escrow services, offer buyer protection or seller protection. Anyone presenting you with such a thing is a scammer.
- Never give out your financial or banking information (e.g bank account, credit card number, eBay/PayPal info) over the Internet.
- Avoid deals involving shipping or escrow services.
- Become aware of common scams and fraud. Do not believe the promise of large sums of money for your help in any task.
- Report to us any attempted fraud, scams or suspicious emails, ads or any other suspicious activities by the site users. In case of actual fraud or illegal activities, we also recommend that you report to the Police.
- Use common sense. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
How to recognize scams:
Scammers can be innovative and always coming with new ideas. However scams may involve one or more of the following:
- Enquiry from someone located far away, often in another country.
- Western Union, Money Gram, cashier's cheque, money order, shipping, escrow services or a guarantee.
- Work from home. Many of these work-from-home offers are "pyramid schemes", requiring you to recruit members in order to be paid. Some of these work-from-home opportunites are fronts for money laundering. Be wary of any 'job' that involves you receiving cheques and cashing them. Find out more at Work-at-Home Scams. For these reasons, Epostasia, as a matter of policy, generally does not accept work-from-home type of ads.
How to report scams and fraud:
- If you see an ad on the Epostasia site which you suspect is spam, illegal, or violates Epostasia's terms of use, please click on the links found under "Abuse Report" at the bottom of the ad's page. Reporting the ad brings it to our attention so that we will review and can delete it quickly if appropriate.
- If you reply to an ad and the ad poster emails you with a suspicious request (like asking for money to be sent to them via a payment service), please forward the email to us and stop all communications with that person.
- If you are the victim of fraud, inform Epostasia and your local police service.
